Space Colony

Joe Burleson, 1984. G.P. Putnam’s Sons, New York

Magic Windows™ -- “A Series of Extraordinary Scenes in Three Dimensions” enlisted the talents of prominent children's book illustrators such as Edward Gorey, Tomie dePaola and Trina Schart Hyman to create 10-panel tunnel books that are notable for having a magnifying lens in the peephole. Of all of the Magic Window books, this one is the hardest to locate.

“Peek into the hole, pull the back cover away from you and suddenly a wonderful scene from the future opens up before your eyes. You will find yourself in a space colony built inside a meteor, light years away from Earth. All around you the flickering lights of futuristic computers blink and flash in glowing fluorescent colors. Watch the space cruiser settle into the mother ship, see the colonists of the future at work, and gradually unfold a vision that will turn on your imagination!” $65.
